 David Kirk

My past lives include a spell as a Royal Marine Commando, a salesman, an investment broker, a schoolteacher and a college and university lecturer and I even spent some time as a mountain guide, both in the UK and overseas.

Through all the changes in career, my love of mountains and my love of taking pictures has been the constant denominator, both of which was probably kicked off in the Royal Marines. Having said this, if I had a time machine I would definitely go back and forge a different path, probably as documentary photographer.

I always hankered after being in the thick of the action in some war zone or other, or being embedded in a project, documenting life at the sharp end. The work of Don Mccullin, Larry Burrows, Nick Hedges or Hommer Sykes, plus many others is what inspires me and I can spend hours sitting or wandering the streets of York shooting images of everyday people going about their routines of life.

I love environmental portraits and my current project, which I am calling ‘The Village People’ involves documenting the lives of ordinary people, who live and work in the village where I live. Don’t get me wrong, I love looking at images of landscapes, seascapes, animals and even still life, but always feel more at home when there are some humans in with them.
