Club Information
Welcome to the website for York Photographic Society (YPS), which was formed in 1887. It is the oldest camera club in York and was one of the very first camera clubs & photographic societies in Britain. After an enforced hiatus, the Society reformed in 1932.
York Photographic Society (YPS) is a friendly camera club with a membership covering a diverse range of ages, experience and interests.
Our programme season runs from September to May. We meet on Wednesday starting at 7:30 prompt. Our program is a mix of the following:
Presentations from guest speakers and internal speakers
Project Nights (where members informally show and discuss their images)
Practical nights
Competition Nights (where images are submitted for judging)
Where to find us
We meet at the Poppleton Centre on the outskirts of York. Postcode YO26 6JT.
Please see map below.
Events
We encourage informal group days out and short trips, ranging from adhoc local visits to York Xmas Market, Naburn Locks or Thorpe Perrow to further afield such as Farne Islands and Glen Affric. We welcome photographers of any level joining us on our jaunts and we are happy to give guidance should you wish.
YPS Committe
YPS has elected offices for President, Vice President, Treasurer and General Secretary, which are supported by a committee. All Committee Members are happy to offer advice and guidance on all matters of photography (even if we have to get our heads together to answer a query) and would welcome an approach from anyone with a query.
Safeguarding
York Photographic Society is committed to safeguard, protect and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, ensuring our safeguarding practice reflects statutory responsibilities, government guidance and complies with best practice as described by the Photograph Alliance of Great Britain.
All members and visitors must read the Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy and adhere to it. Children wishing to join must also have appendix 2 completed by their legal guardian.
Fees
Membership costs £55 per year, discounted to £25 for those under 18 or in full time education. We welcome you coming along as a guest for a couple of sessions first to get a feel for what we are about. Guest fees are £5 per meeting. Every year, at the beginning of the season (September) and after the Christmas break (January), we have an Open Evening where you can come and see what is on offer for free.
Please contact us if you have any queries or just come along to one of our Wednesday night sessions and have a chat with us before the meeting starts or in the Poppleton Centre bar after the meeting. There is ample on-site parking at the Poppleton Centre which is easily found on Main Street in Upper Poppleton.
