The widely published, West Country-based nature photographer Mike Deverell will be giving a talk entitled, "Around the World in 120 Minutes" at York Photographic Society on the 18th March 2015.
After gaining a broad grounding in general photography through the City & Guilds course, Mike soon began to channel his energy and passion into nature photography. Being born and bred in the beautiful and unspoilt county of Somerset, his love of the natural world has been a part of him since his childhood and this shines through in his work.
Undoubtedly, Mike brings his own personal response to what he observes around him in the natural world. Pre-visualsation, planning, fieldcraft, and a thorough knowledge of and affinity for his subjects are the foundation of Mike's approach to wildlife photography. His has an emotional relationship with nature and his interpretations capture the subtle harmony that exists between the wildlife and their world in an evocative, sensitive and pictorial way. He aims to capture through his images the ambience, the atmosphere and the aura of the occasion.
Mike has travelled extensively in his desire to witness the beauty amidst its natural environment and to capture, through his photography, what he is privileged to see. Among his favourite places are Antarctica, the Arctic, Africa, the Falkland Islands, Japan, Norway and the USA. However, it is still the United Kingdom that inspires and motivates him the most, in particular the islands of Scotland and most of all, his home ground around the Somerset Levels.
Mike has been commissioned to provide images for display purposes and for calendars by several companies and his work has been published in a number of nature magazines. He has won many awards in national and international exhibitions and has held three private exhibitions of his award-winning images. His photographs are held in several private collections in the UK.
Recently retired from running his own successful business, Mike is keen to share his knowledge and passion for wildlife photography with others. This can be done through joining his photographic holidays and instructional courses, and/or by seeing his beautifully illustrated lectures. His relaxed and cheerful personality, and his sense of enjoyment for what he is doing, belies his dedicated, determined and passionate approach. His enthusiasm for the natural world and photography is both infectious and inspiring.
