York Photographic Society

New Season Starts 6th September. Full 2017-2018 programme published

This is the website of York Photographic Society, York's longest established photography club and indeed one of Britain's earliest photographic societies. New members are always welcome to this thriving, friendly and energetic camera club.

As our exciting programme continues in 2015, the 14th January will see York Photographic Society hosting a talk by local portrait and commercial photographer Jim Poyner entitled, "12 Years a Pro and Still Winging It". Here's what he has to say about himself and his talk:

I have been a full time self employed photographer in York for 12 years now, operating a GP service with a good mix of wedding, portrait, corporate and commercial photographic services. I have no photographic qualifications but have been taking pictures since I was 9 years old and had my own darkroom at the age of 11.

Regular long term local clients include York NHS Trust, the National Center for Early Music, Aesthetica Magazine, York City Council, Yorkshire Air Museum and the best design and print services across the city.

My team and I shoot around 30 weddings a year along with numerous family, baby and bump portrait sessions, all on location. We also shoot a huge range of commercial commissions, from interiors to headshots and product shots.

My talk will whisk through as many examples of this range of work as possible in the time allowed with lots of background along the way along with insights into how and why a shot was made.  I'll be more than happy to take any questions, from the geeky to the aesthetic, and will do my best to illustrate what you have to be able to do in order to survive and thrive commercially in today's photography market.
